Self-Respect

Dear Editor: When my “article” called Pride was edited to appear as a “letter,” I felt an essential something was missing. Someone once remarked “You must be very proud of your children.” I responded, “No. For them I feel love, respect, enjoyment, sympathy. Not Pride, which I have long understood as the deadliest sin.”

Regarding my own achievements, about which I might justifiably take pride, I prefer the term self-respect, which does not suggest superiority over others but may operate as a basis for strength and clarity of being.

Two more notes: Like Frank Granshaw, I’d like the chance to recheck my writing before publication. And my son’s children are Korean, not half-Korean – they’re adopted.
