Eric Sabelman's very interesting report [in the 3/18/2023 issue of Extra Extra Western Friend] about Quaker retirement communities is a good reminder that it is important to know the actual dynamics of all of these communities at the same depth which he understands Friends House beyond its website and public marketing. Nothing beats knowing how many residents are Quakers and from what traditions, what sorts of worship opportunities there are, whether there is a close proximity to another Quaker institution (e.g., Pennswood and George School), how residents participate in governance, and many other points. And one correction: As long as Oregon counts, Quakers have founded two retirement communities on the West Coast.
