Native Americans will be heavily impacted by policies that are being launched by the Trump administration. Border closings, deportations, oil and gas exploitation, anti-LGBTQ+ policies, restrictions on reproductive rights, shutting down DEI programs, funding cuts -- all these and more new policies disproportionately threaten the health and safety of Indigenous people and other people of color.
On January 19, a day before the Inauguration, we hosted a webinar with Two Spirit speakers Candi Brings Plenty (Oglala Sioux) and Jordan Decker (Cherokee). They talked about their personal journeys as Native transgender people, and about the many roles Two Spirit people have played in Native societies historically and today. The next day, Donald Trump announced that the policy of the federal government going forward will be that there are only two genders -- male and female. It was shattering to hear this, especially after listening to and learning from Jordan and Candi the day before.
