Last week, School of the Americas Watch (SOA Watch) hosted an author talk with Dr. Maha Hilal where we discussed her new book, Innocent Until Proven Muslim: Islamophobia, the War on Terror, and the Muslim Experience Since 9/11.
SOA Watch has chosen Dr. Hilal's book for our next "Dismantling Borders" book club reading. We will send out details in the coming weeks, but encourage you to buy the book in advance so we can have robust discussions. While Dr. Hilal's book focuses on the State's targeting of Muslims, not only is there a large community of Latinx Muslims, the issues that she raises in the book speak to the consequences of a War on Terror which has had implications on many marginalized communities throughout the U.S. and the world.
As we work towards making our social justice movements increasingly intersectional, we are looking forward to how Dr. Hilal's book may inform how we think about state violence in the context of Central and South America, especially in the last two decades of the War on Terror.
We look forward to contacting you soon about our next book club featuring Innocent Until Proven Muslim.
