Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking the Domination Code

The Indigenous Concerns Subcommittee of the Ministry Committee of Pacific Yearly Meeting invites Friends to join an online screening of the film The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking the Domination Code with a follow-up discussion.

The film explains how the "Doctrine of Discovery" was used to justify Europeans' seizure of the lands of Indigenous peoples in the name of "civilizing" and "Christianizing" them. As surprising as it may seem, all ownership of all of the land in the United States originates and is based upon this doctrine. The US legal system continues to use this Doctrine against Indigenous peoples to this day.

This program is offered online only in two parts, first a screening and initial reactions (April 16) and the second diving deeper into where we go from here (April 30). Both sessions 3:00-4:30 pm (Pacific Time), optional closed captioning available. Register individually or on behalf of a Meeting or other group.
