Dear F/friends,
In honor of Bayard Rustin’s birthday on 17 March, we are excited to release a recording of “The Bayard Rustin Legacy Forum.”
This year, The BlackQuaker Project partnered with Swarthmore College’s Department of Peace and Conflict Studies to present a limited edition of the Black Quaker Lives Matter Film Festival & Forum, hosted by Dr. Harold D. Weaver, Jr., and moderated by Dr. Sa’ed Atshan.
This forum discussed the remarkable legacy of Friend Bayard through a series of brief lecture-presentations by scholars and activists: Lauren Brownlee, Deputy General Secretary at the Friends Committee on National Legislation, who explored what Rustin's legacy means for Quaker communities in the present; Dr. terrance wiley, who focused on the evolution of Rustin's politics; and Dr. Weaver, who reflected on his personal convergences with–and divergences from–Bayard Rustin between 1950 and the present.
Our three panelists also participated in a dialogue facilitated by Dr. Atshan, and an audience Q & A session. We are grateful to the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) for helping to make this event possible with their returning sponsorship.
