Asylum Support by Friends in Berkeley

Published: July 3, 2020

Berkeley Friends Meeting and Strawberry Creek Meeting now have a joint Accompaniment Team for Immigrants seeking asylum. Berkeley Meeting has made available their basement apartment, and on Monday, June 15, they welcomed their first guest, who is from El Salvador and has spent the last 4-5 years in ICE detention, having been turned over to ICE after an arrest for a minor offense. This migrant’s asylum request is in process and he will soon have a work permit. He is glad to do yard work, car washing, and other jobs. He finished his GED during detention, and he can communicate quite well in English. He will be at the meetinghouse. for at least three months.
