Mountain Friends Camp News

~

Dear Friends,

Our Mountain Friends Community Camp at Home this summer was a great experience, with lots of Quaker camp spirit connecting us despite the distance. We mailed “Buddy Boxes” to campers across 9 states and hosted three full weeks of zoom programming in July. I'm particularly proud of our summer staff, all the young adults this summer were former campers and CITs with MFC who brought a huge amount of experience and commitment to our camp culture and traditions. Our campers were an amazing bunch this summer too, full of creativity and resilience, and we loved how many signed up for more weeks and brought new family and friends to camp as we went along! Thanks to everyone who took a chance on a new version of MFC this summer, I'm so glad you did!

Each week we ended with a special evening session- Creativity Night performances, skits from each camper group, and a candlelight goodbye circle where campers and staff spoke about favorite memories and affirmations for the camp group. This is always my favorite part of our overnight camps, and it was beautiful to see the tradition continue and reach new campers this summer.

We also had some amazing guests join us to lead special programs, including Molly Wingate with a powerful "Poetry Heals" workshop, and an option to screen the award-winning documentary “Microplastic Madness” followed by a Q&A with Debby Lee, co-director and producer. Zenaida and Cern "Sunshine" from our 2019 staff joined too for some great arts and movement programs, and you can meet our full 2020 staff here. Read on for more about the Buddy Boxes, how we adapted managed signing over zoom, quotes from our camp families and staff, and exciting news about our next event, camp reunion and International Day of Peace celebration on September 20th!

We couldn't bring these impactful programming to our camper without the support of our greater community, thank you! Can you help us meet our goals and head into all the unknowns and hopes for 2021 with stronger footing? Our fiscal year ends September 30th, and we're still almost $5,000 below our revised goal for the year. We were able to reduce many expenses with the decisions to cancel in person programming, but not all, and I was glad to hire a strong staff and continue my own work in a reduced scale this year. Your donations make a huge difference, this year and for the future of our small nonprofit.
