About the Speaker: Minna Rothman is a contemporary fiber artist and retired atmospheric physicist who weaves highly technical, deeply emotional handwoven tapestries. Based in Brookline, Massachusetts, her multi-decade career seamlessly transitions between the objective structures of climate modeling and the expressive, tactile world of fine art textiles. She was born in the former Yugoslavia and migrated to the US in 1979. She spent over 40 years working on climate modeling, translating massive data sets into visual graphics so that others could easily comprehend her research. This synthesis of scientific data into imagery heavily informed her subsequent layout designs as an artist. She also studied drawing and painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Blending her ancestral heritage with professional precision, she established her practice at MZR Studio. She views contemporary tapestry as an intersection of painting and sculpture–assuming a two-dimensional form but using physical fiber manipulation to parallel a sculptural experience.
