The Cloud of Unknowing

(US/Pacific)

Wednesday April 8th from 6-7pm Pacific Time. This Workshop is offered both in person and on zoom.

The Cloud of Unknowing, a 14th-century work written by an anonymous monk, describes the practice of experiencing God in silent contemplation. Since being “discovered” by Father Thomas Keating in the 1960s, it has been used as a foundational text in the Christian practice of Centering Prayer.

The monk’s instructions to his student are sometimes cryptic, sometimes transcendent, often puzzling, always profound: “It is possible to know God by love, but by thought, never.” Come meditate with us, and see how this text can illuminate your contemplative practice.

The Rev’d Chris Bell served a church in Santa Rosa, California, for fifteen years following his graduation from Harvard Divinity School. During that time he developed a ministry grounded in contemplative practice, spiritual formation, and community engagement. Alongside his pastoral work, Chris has long been a dedicated practitioner of Zen and was recently named a Zen Teacher in the Harada–Yasutani lineage, a tradition associated with teachers such as Hakuun Yasutani.
