Susan Sullivan Maynard passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Susan had a two-decade struggle with cancer which she faced with grace and courage. Susan is survived by her beloved husband Bob Maynard and Noele, Adrienne, Amelia, and Phillip children from their blended marriage. She was a long-time Quaker, social justice activist, and loving mother and stepmother.
Susan worked her way through a Bachelors (Magna Cum Laude) and MBA at Case Western Reserve University. Susan’s academic pursuits encompassed business and fiber arts. She devoted 15 years of her professional life to Dolby Laboratories in the Bay area. Her weaving was a lifelong pursuit that led her to author several articles in fiber magazines and to host spinning demonstrations and provide on-the-spot lessons at various community events and fairs.
Susan was a committed environmentalist and biker, and volunteered annually to help organize Bike to Work Day. She actively participated in the San Francisco Meeting with her husband and became an engaged member of the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), attending national conferences. Susan was passionate about social justice issues, particularly related to reproductive health rights.
Susan and Bob eventually retired to Salem where, despite health challenges, they continued to make meaningful contributions to the Salem Friends Meeting. Susan enjoyed the fellowship at SFM, sharing food for monthly potlucks and workdays and building craft projects with the children.
Susan’s quiet, graceful presence will be missed by Salem Friends Meeting, as well as San Francisco Friends Meeting, and other communities she touched.
