To the Editor: Why the stark difference between the Quaker responses to two tragic and dangerous ongoing wars in Yemen and Ukraine?
Dear Friends: Why are Quakers supporting peace efforts by Africans in their Great Lakes Region Consortium? Wherever there are valuable minerals to be mined – whether in Africa or eastern Ukraine – outside political and investor power will combine to conscript young men, train them with military weapons, and send them to risk their lives for benefits they will never see for themselves.

In your Quaker meeting, you may have experienced events similar to these: a Friend doesn’t want to be on a committee with another Friend due to a past conflict; two Friends complain about a third party, whom they find to be impossible (yes, it does happen); a Friend speaks up in business meeting about a conflict that is going on, and no one responds or takes any follow-up action.

The results of our recent national and local elections were profoundly pleasing to some of us while deeply disturbing to others. When our candidates or parties have prevailed, we have confidence in the direction of government, while if they were unsuccessful, we lament the prospect of decision-making in the hands of those we feel are less capable or less committed to the principles we value. <
