A personal exploration of the nature of God – through journeys in the visual arts and the writings of three other authors – Mary Conrow Coelho, Thomas Gates, and Nancy Ellen Abrams.
Sliding forward, upward pucker
soft and fresh, pore
to first slick of spring dew.
An ancient etymology.
Syllables underfoot
unfolding across continents,
thousand-year scroll unscraped,
each overwritten character
layering through, spelling new words
with old ink,
I don’t know if you are real
and I don’t want to be fooled
anymore, letting myself be born
into beliefs that are both wrong
and profoundly harmful – two-edged
sword slicing my insides
as it tears stranger into enemy.
I feel silly in ways
I didn’t as a kid,
writing to you
this time unsure.
