What Can Quakers Offer in These Times? – Shan Cretin

The first query in your call was, “What do we have to offer as Quakers to the challenges of our times?” I feel that part of my job is to help us know the reality of our history. Friends are not only the myth and the uplift.

Love Always Protects

Friends who gathered at Pacific Yearly Meeting (PYM) in July 2014 were moved by a refugee crisis unfolding on the US-Mexico border. Thousands of children continue to escape violence in Central America and seek reunification with family members working in the US. The crisis has many causes that require thoughtful analysis to discern long-term solutions, but for us the causes do not matter.

A Hollow Power

Dear Friends: On a plane to Seattle last December, I struck up a long conversation with a young white man. We touched on nearly everything. Eventually he told me that he was studying law, but hated it. He especially hated his classmates’ obsession with money (due in part to the huge debts they would face upon graduation).
