Memorial Meeting

Berkeley Monthly Meeting

Joan Conrad, a longtime member of Berkeley Meeting, passed away on December 5, 2011. She was born on October 2, 1933, in New York, New York. Her parents were Hugo Kirchner and Mildred Lowell Mount Kirchner. She attended high school in Lake Hiawatha, Queens, New York, and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut.

After college she traveled across the US with the American Friends Service. Joan became a member of Berkeley Friends Meeting on March 27, 1955. She went to Oregon State University and graduated with a Master’s Degree. There she met Eugene Conrad and they were married in 1956 at Westminster House in Corvallis, Oregon. They had three children while in Corvallis, Mark Evan, born in 1957, Brian, born in 1958 and Anna Marie, born in 1960.

Joan was a loving wife and mother who dedicated her life attempting to break stereotypes. She attended college and against her parents’ wishes, majored in science, a path far from that expected for women in the early 50s. Upon entering Oregon State to earn her master's in horticulture, she was required to sign a paper promising she would never teach agriculture or science. She took the promise to heart, instead focusing on supporting her husband while he built a career in the United States Forest Service, and raising her family. Her turn came as her children entered high school and she returned to college at California Polytech, in Pomona, earning her unencumbered teaching credential.

Joan loved spending time with her son Mark, daughter-in-law Laura (Stein) and children Amanda and Christopher and her daughter and son-in-law Brent Allen and children Keith and Carissa.

Joan and Gene had a wonderful life, supporting each other for 55 years. She passed away December 5, 2011 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was survived by Gene, Mark and Laura Conrad, Amanda and Christopher, Anna Marie and Brent Allen, Keith and Carissa.

Gene passed away June 14, 2014.
