Jeffery Lee Cawley was born in Trenton, N.J., to Richard Cawley and Elizabeth Garwood Shinn Cawley. He grew up in Jacobstown and Haddonfield, NJ, with his sister Libby. He graduated from Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, with dual degrees in Chemistry and Geology in 1968. Jeff pursued a PhD program in GeoChemistry at Princeton University. His doctoral studies were interrupted by the Vietnam War draft, at which time he served two years as a Conscientious Objector in the NJ Neuropsych Hospital.
Jeff moved to Portland in 1972. In 1979 he married Liz Goeke and started Northwest Analytics Inc., a local technology company. He helped guide the company to its award-winning status in Data Analytics. Jeff was acknowledged as an expert in the application of laboratory data, especially focusing on Food Safety, where he was internationally in demand as a speaker and consultant.
Jeff grew up influenced by his Quaker grandmother and told his children about ancestral Friends persecuted for living by their testimonies in England. After episodic participation in Quaker activities since his college days, he found a spiritual home in the Bridge City community in 2003. Jeff joined Bridge City Friends Meeting in November of 2004 when his spiritual life and social concerns lead him to seek membership. He has been active in peace and justice activities, and committee work with Ministry and Pastoral Care, Nominating, and Adult Education. Jeff served as Treasurer for several years.
Since retirement in 2014 Jeff became a founding member of the arts collective Manifestation PDX. He became active in the Northwest Blacksmith Association, building on a vision to keep the artform alive through demonstrations, artists’ gatherings, and teaching workshops.
Jeff died on Memorial Day of cancer. He was surrounded at home by his family. Jeff is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Goeke; his children, Richard Cawley and wife, Iris Asher; Sarah Cawley; Matthew Lee Cawley and wife, Kristen Haverman and Matt’s children, Jaden Cawley, Cedar Cawley, Bridge Cawley and Amelia Haverman-Cawley; his sister, Elizabeth Michelson of Stamford, CT, her children, Courtney and Jeffery Michelson; the couple’s honorary Kyrgyz daughter Nazira Adieva and her son, Adrian, of San Diego, CA.
