Submission Guidelines
Our Guidelines
Western Friend strives to bring Friends in the West stories by and about Friends they know. To fulfill this mission, we invite Friends in the West especially, as well as Friends from elsewhere who have worshipped with, ministered to, or are otherwise connected with Friends in the West to share their words with the magazine. If you are not familiar with the magazine, please spend some time reading articles on this site before contacting us- it will give you some insight into the content and tone we seek.
Western Friend does accept unsolicited articles; however, we strongly encourage you to first contact the editor to test out your ideas. Our articles generally ranges from 650-2500 words, though we will sometimes publish longer articles. We are also interested in poetry, artwork and photography (black & white or color.) Read our Submit Your Work page in this section to send us an article and to learn about our regular columns and special issues.
Please note that we receive many submissions, and are unable to use them all- and that it may take us a while to run the ones we do use!
Western Friend is always on the lookout for inspiring stories of the work of Friends, be it that of an individual or a meeting. This might be work in the surrounding community, service among Friends, or the oft-challenging work it takes simply to live a Spirit-led existence. We are especially interested in hearing from and about younger participants in the Religious Society of Friends- service projects, particularly successful First Day School ideas, stories and essays about life as a young Quaker. Essays and articles about timeless topics are also most welcome: Quaker process, personal perspectives on the Divine, the intersections between Quakerism and other faith traditions and philosophies, political causes of historic interest to Friends, individual experiences of Quaker gatherings in the West, outreach in meetings, Friends and Spirit-led financial matters- the list goes on.
